  • 5:45 I had that exact emachines W3400, with the 80gb HDD, 512mb ram, XP, Athlon 64 and integrated ATi graphics. Was a used and abused "family pc" for years starting from 2005 to around 2012 or so. God that thing was a slow pile of shit. Until the bloated XP oem install crapped out. Put a few flavors of linux on it that made it better than it was when new. Also repurposed the case for a "sleeper" gaming build. All the big-box store stickers on the front made it an ideal sleeper rig.

  • I remember using an eMachine back in early 2000s that I shared with my siblings. Had some fond memories with it. It wasn't just the video games and music of my early teens but also fixing the thing lol. I helped make the system last longer while also learning more about troubleshooting and computers in general from it. I'm just glad eMachines gave us Millennial teens PCs our parents could afford.

  • My first computer as a teenager that was actually mine and not "a family computer" was an Emachines, and I loved it. Still remeber the model number off by heart e3031. The reliabilty issue did present itself eventually though, as the cheap PSU went rogue and fried the motherboard. It died just after I placed an order for a new pc. So it served me right til the end haha

  • The one eMachines i had (which was a Celeron 366) was actually pretty good. Didn't really have any issues with it, other than the cheap plastic stuff breaking off but that was all just cosmetic (like I think the floppy drive button broke off so I had to use a pencil to eject disks). But never had any hardware issues. Of course, I only kept that computer for about 2 years (bought it for $300 I think back in 2002 or something) but at the time it had Windows 98SE and otherwise worked fine. I eventually built my own computer after that, I think it was a Pentium 3 and that began my PC building experience, which I did for about 10 years and then sort of let go of that and focused more on software development/internet. But regardless, the eMachines that I had played a role in my programming experience. I think after the eMachines, I had purchased an HP with a faster celeron and had that for about a year and then built the Pentium 3 system. It's funny that Acer purcahse eMachines because I've had more problems with Acers than I had with eMachines. IMO Acer has become the budget computer brand and sits below HP/Compaq, Dell, Lenovo and Asus. I mean their laptops (some of the cheap ones) had plastic hinges (which I guess on a $350 laptop you can't be too demanding, but even Lenovo used some metal hinges on their sub $500 laptops). I think that eMachines bought on the new idea of a budget computer that everyone could afford. I mean yes HP, Compaq and Dell had affordable computers, but most were still considerably more than the eMachines (buy about 2x, but were still affordable for most as they were often under $1000). the emachines weren't the fastest, but you got a reasonably good value for the money. I mean a $300 Celeron computer could do basic Internet stuff, typing, etc.

  • Bought an emachines laptop in the mid naughties. Since then I've had three Apple computers bought 2nd-hand. On one of them the dvd drive is long broken, and if one nudges the power brick the whole thing powers off. One of them has ceased to boot up altogether; one I gave to my aging mom because the computer is so darn slow - it's ok for just searching recipes online I guess. The "cheaply built" emachine, on the other hand, works just fine.

  • Just because eMachines died out in 2004, that doesn't mean people stopped using them, right? I remember all of my family members had eMachine computers for a really long time. My elementary school had gateway computers and eMachines as well. That was back in 2008 that I remember still using those computers.

  • I got an Emachine from a client in about 2012 >Poor thing is a netbook with vista basic >Slow as hell >I decide to install XP on that >Dont make a backup beforehand. >Big mistake. >Getting bluescreens when booting up XP. It was AHCI mode. >Set to IDE, reinstall, XP boots now. >Still slow as hell. WTF its a clean install, I had P3s with less than half this RAM run better than this Turns out this chipset only did PIO instead of DMA when in IDE mode. The weak CPU would bottleneck everything related to IO. Support for this netbook was non-existent. Been burned about emachines ever since.

Build quality was bad, but it was very fast (for the time) as it had a high end Athlon and NVIDIA GT, paired with 4GB RAM (good for time). I enjoyed it, and have good memories of gaming on it.
