Doom 2: Hell on Earth. Released by id Software and GT Interactive on October 10th, 1994! Looking back at the history of its release, its new monsters, and that fantastically super shotgun.

  • 3:42 on the manual: "When you're comfortable playing the game, try using the keyboard and the mouse simultaneously. The mouse provides fine aiming for your weapon while the keyboard permits you to activate the many useful functions of the game" Keyboard+Mouse advocated by Id Software as early as 1994.

  • Looking back at DOOM II really shows how much ID Software payed attention to the original arts style when designing DOOM Eternal

  • I remember back in the day where I thought if I look at the enemy up there and shoot, it will hit the demon and somehow it always worked. I was like "I control my aiming with my thoughts!" Ah... imagination.

  • I'm sure Sandy Petersen has come to terms with the fact that he made some of the worst and most widely despised maps in the whole game. Meanwhile the most memetic maps like Gantlet, Crusher, and Dead Simple were from American McGee. John Romero did Circle of Death and Industrial Zone which are probably some of the most brutal maps in the game (Industrial Zone being my personal favorite,) and Tom Hall can claim the title for making the best map in Refueling Base. I don't give Petersen credit for cleaning up and finishing it.

  • I always go for the shotgun in map 1. But it was only recently that I actually thought about how pointless it is to go for it. You get your first shotgun 10 seconds into Map 2.. The early shot gun only helps you with 5 zombiemen and 1 shotgunner, assuming you cleared the imps from map 1. And even then, 30 seconds after that you get the super shotgun, which makes the normal shotgun almost irrelevant .

  • I was studing computer graphics at university at that time, so I knew the graphics part of the games engine and why you could not look up or down. But that is outdated knowledge since the introduction of OpenGL graphics cards. OpenGL later overrun by the inferior DirectX from Monopolist Dodgy Market Practice company Microsoft.

  • 4:01 I hate how this doesn't appear as the default menu art on the Switch port. It only appears if you access a Master Level and go back to the menu. Also how they changed the red crosses to green. I don't know why they had to do that...

  • If I could change one thing about Doom II: The Arachnotron enemies should’ve given you a small energy cell ammo after you killed them, and the Revenants should’ve given up one rocket each. They used ammunition similar to your own weapons - but unlike the zombie enemies, they didn’t help to refill your ammo after an encounter. It was unfair!

  • When I played Doom II as a kid back then (in 1994 I was 14) I had a brand new 486DX2-66MHz which was a quite good computer at that time. But I remember that this machine was still too slow for some Doom 2 levels when there was a lot of action going on. I was never able to finish the final level because it was just a dia show when tons of monsters appeared. It was just ahead of its time. Also the bad controls were a problem for me back then. Nowadays with new engines this game is still great but with a much better playability.

  • Just so you fellow retro gaming nerds are aware, Doom Eternal comes with the wads for both Doom and Doom II, they're located in {INSTALL DIRECTORY}\base\classicwads You can load them up in any source port like GZDoom. So, if you don't already have the wads on a media server and don't feel like grabbing them off the internet, but have Doom eternal installed.. there you go.

Great games but they're making it seem Doomguy story having ties to this whole Hell on Earth thing. Also perks a plenty which are really just taking away the fun run and gun shooting style into this rpg like shooter.
