$2,400 Laptop From 1994: Packard Bell Statesman

50MHz Cyrix CPU! 12MB RAM! Windows 3.1! All this for under 3 grand in 1994. Essentially a Zenith Z-Star in disguise, the Statesman is a halfway enjoyable notebook computer that falls short in several ways. And it's all the more amusing to play around with because of it.

  • 2:36 nice nod to the 90's. I didn't have a PB, but I had 386-sx laptop in the 90's when I was in school. This video brought back some cool memories (and maybe a few I wished I had forgotten). I just subscribed. I'd love to see videos about PB or Gateway. On my laptop, the PC card seems to have been cosmetic, and a card modem never worked.

  • Hard disks just amaze me. With SSDs these days they seem like a much too complicated solution with far too many moving parts. Lacking alternatives, we perfected them, just like the internal combustion engine to a point where we don't even realize how fascinating the tech is. What they do and for how long they seem to be able to do that reliably without any maintenance (26 years in this case) baffles my mind.

  • I like those videos you make man, but why don't you say something about purpose they served... I mean, they were not made for gaming... how they performed tasks like text editing, spreadsheets, email etc. Like this, your videos message is all "the old technology sucked"... Even now I sometimes use text based music player, terminal based text editor, rss reader etc. and I love them... I can totally see my self working on this machine, since (except some image editor) it has all I need in a computer.

  • Also, if anyone wants one -- YOU WILL HAVE TO RECAP THE POWER BOARD. I have two of these, and both had totally busted caps. Rotting fish smell, leaking electrolyte on the board, loud buzzing sound from the board. The nastier one, which smelled like a dead freezer full of sardines, actually worked. Like ran Windows and Doom. Which should be a reminder that things which seem to work fine may still need service.

    David KinzlerDavid Kinzler3 miesięcy temu
  • Thank you so much. I've had one of these for years, but no PCMCIA drivers for it. On another note, if anyone is left unsure, these are cheap, nasty. Basically 386DX-level performance, only 16 color video in Windows -- sold well into 1995 for about a thousand dollars as a seemingly bottomless closeout that may have more been their Taiwanese partner clearing out an overstock of 386SX motherboards and chunky white cases. Basically feels like an old 386SX laptop with a bit more kick in the CPU department -- which is what it is.

  • That "J" mouse sounds like an absolute nightmare. I have a Thinkpad and I use the trackpoint all the time - more often than the stylus (it's a convertible tablet model), touchscreen, or the touchpad. It's a little slow as mouse options go but it's super-convenient and unobtrusive. And all they had to do was add one little nub to the middle of the keyboard, and a couple buttons below the space bar... What a dumb idea to take basically the same idea, but integrate all those functions into existing keyboard keys...
