Released in 1984 the DECtalk DTC-01 was *THE* classic 80s speech synthesizer, used for everything from weather stations to movies. Today on Oddware we have the DECtalk PC from 1991, an ISA card for converting text to speech on MS-DOS PCs!

  • mh, I listened to some weather forecasts on radio (SSB I believe) on a friends boat once and we couldn't decide if its speech synthesis or just a very unenthusiastic man.

  • I have a soft spot for DEC. In the 90's I was doing 3D animation using lightwave. One day a company came to me and asked for an animation, I said yes as usual and they told me theyd send me a DEC Alpha to speed up rendering time. Not only that, I was allowed to keep it after doing the animation. My friends were obviously jealous. Loved that machine.

  • 4:35 Seen that thing before in a group home for disabled children in the mid-late 2000's, it was called a "Springboard" and the non-verbal children would use it to communicate, before iPads became available enough for group homes to adopt those. I remember one of the children at the group home had a compulsion to say he wanted whatever he decided he was going to eat off his plate before eating, so it'd go like this: [has special juice with vitamins and stuff because he was a very picky eater] [taps button] I [taps another button] WANT [taps another button] DRINK [drinks juice] I imitated the voice a few times and once jokingly hit "Apple" over and over again. APPLE. APPLE. APPLE. APPLE. The non-verbal user of the Springboard was amused by me screwing with the device and started repeatedly hitting APPLE to show his amusement.

  • Related to his comment on the woodgrain 486. I don't know how, but I made ribbon cables look organized. I only installed IDE and floppy drives, but it was like origami. This was 2 weeks ago. I was building a brand new system with an Athlon 64, floppy drive, Windows 10/Ubuntu 18.04 LTS dualboot, and a couple VMs. It was my dream PC but it was a mess inside.

  • The voice of Steven Hawkings? Seems a bit odd that it'd cost so much in 1984 when the Amiga would have something built in, an entire computer for half the price.

  • Hay this is great, it takes me back I remember that. When I was a kid about seven or eight years old I went to a school called Pembroke meadows elementary, now it’s just called Pembroke Elementary. I saw the first talking computer by Apple there, WTKR channel 3 news came to our school and reported on it. We got to see news anchor Paula Miller, our class was on the 6 o’clock news, I was in a special Ed class I’m totally blind so those talking computers were a big help to us.

  • So this is essentially software-based speech synthesis, running on a coprocessor that's basically an x86 PC on a card. Why not just run the synthesis on the actual CPU without the $1,200 card?
