LGR - Recording CRT Computer Monitors

Pointing a camera at a CRT TV is one thing, but recording computer monitors is a bit different. I've received lots of questions about this over the past decade, so here we are! These are my current tips and tricks for filming CRT monitors.

  • Can I add something extra: do not compare DSLR camera's to videocamera's, because the video feature needs to be considered a luxury extra, where as actual videocamera's (and in the really professional ones, especially) the sensor-readout technology causes a lot less of the flickering usually seen in DSLR's. Most DSLR's use rolling shutter readout, while good videocamera's use a global shutter. Rolling shutter technology is much, much more prone to flickering screens due to the fact that it reads out pixel rows continuous while building the image, instead of reading a whole frame and storing it. Flickering is caused due to the fact that the refreshing of the screen is running over the screen while the sensor is being readout in much the same way as well.

  • Thanks for the excellent video! Could you recommend some budget priced cameras or ones we can find relatively cheap 2nd hand where you can 'dial in' the shutter speed as you describe? Some of us can't afford $1000+ for a GH5S! Many thanks in advance :)

  • Thanks for sharing your knowledge of this stuff. Especially helpful was the part on equalizing out CRT whine. It never would have occurred to me to do that as I can no longer hear those frequencies!

    retrobitsretrobits5 miesięcy temu
  • Protip: If you want to hear if there's actually high pitched CRT whine, try cutting the speed of the audio in half. It'll go from an inaudible dog whistle down to a hum. This is very useful for working with frequencies (before and after) that you can't easily hear.

By the way best way to record those screens is with a DV camera, digital recording to analog ( 2000 era DV cameras with FireWire out) tape not with a newer digital format camera.

But when i record a Windows 8-10 boot screen Windows logo shows as white rather than blue, so i can't record it headon, i have to tilt my phone camera to an angle.

  • Clint, I am constantly impressed. A lot of PLworldrs just point a camera at something and call it a day. I'm constantly understanding more why your videos have had such a hold on me over the years. I have been a die-hard fan of yours since about 2013. Hard to believe it's been 6 years now. I think when I subscribed, you had maybe 40,000 subs. I thought you were so underrated because of how few subs you had. And now rightfully so, your channel has taken off. 1.27 million subscribers!? You deserve it big time. Your attention to the smallest of details make such a huge impression on people without them even knowing it. I wouldn't have realized you went to these lengths to make CRTs look good.

  • Here's an idea I use to take pictures of books with glossy covers: _Adjust the angle of the subject itself._ Sound like a decent idea? I know that this is a lot easier to us do books than heavy cathode ray tube based displays, but it is manageable. Here at 14:39 for example, I know this glare was done deliberately, however, still the monitor could have been pointed lower and the angle and placement of the camera adjusted accordingly. Also, for capturing footage when (you yourself are) in front of the CRT monitor, I would recommend angling yourself *45 degrees right of the monitor*, with the camera farther away, zoom in, *45 degrees left of the monitor.* Think X/Y pattern for stereo mic placement. Hope someone found this useful.

My first PC i bought with part time money in 95 was the P100 (8GB hard drive 8MB ram no vid card with 14.4bps modem....[still have the PC]) and ended up buying a IDE zip drive (few years later) due to studying computer sci at uni (we studies JAVA 1.0 as the first Uni at Australia studying Java.........yeah...i know....second year sucked). I now work in Policing in Australia. Anyhow. Whenever i see CCTV footage of me (usually top down) i go "oh my god...my hair......(79 child)". Anyhow. I went full buzz cut number 2 all over embracing the lake of no hair. You need to. Please. Keep the beard but shave the hair. You will be "Cool +15" for me. Better still. • So this may be dumb, but what about splitting the connection into a capture device, then back-projecting the captured image onto the device in post (using the footage as a guide)? It won't work in all situations, but it seems like it could help in certain situations, or for certain patchwork corrections.

  • PAL Territory is 50, unless it is NTSC that is common in old import VHS or PS2 60hz mode or when it is PAL60 the extension of PAL to 60hz compatibility which GameCube and Xbox use for one, and is also actually 60hz instead of NTSC 59.945something - and some VGA standards are 60.05 and I may just have wrestled with way too many things where these are more important than these should be.

  • Nitpick. 60 fps capture rate is NOT a shutter speed of 60. The shutter speed can be (and often is) faster. The frame rate only limits how slow the shutter speed can be. It does not actually SET the shutter speed. That is done independently to get other effects. Do not call a frame rate of 60 fps the "shutter speed", because that is not what it is.

That said, even at my age I can still hear CRT whine. A few years back I worked at a museum that was hosting a video game history exhibit so it was basically an old-school arcade. Walking through that big room to turn everything off at night, surrounded by CRTs all running at conflicting frequencies...

  • I'm really happy to hear all of this, and that I know what you're talking about, since I know how camera's work. I work with people (I kid you not) that do not know the difference between f1/25 and 25 frames per second (fps). And yes, I'm talking about the videoproduction team. In Dutch a Aperature is Diafragma, so that can be confusing too. So when setting up the camera, the person is just winging it. After filming a darker scene, h just keeps turning wheels and sliding options untill the screen lightens up. See! I don't need all of these lights. And after importing footage asking himself why his footage is so grainy. I stopped explaining what ISO does.

  • I've shot stills of screens. One thing I find helps a lot, regardless of the screen type, is to make sure the screen brightness matches the ambient brightness of its surroundings. For example, the display should be about as bright as its off-white bezels. This will probably make the screen look pretty dark to your eyes since we're used to the displays being brighter than their surroundings, but it really helps the camera out.

  • Some clarification. Shutter speed is not Framerate Framerate of the camera is measured in fps and shutter speed is measured in fractions of a second. 1/60 shutter speed and 60 fps framerate would mean the shutter is open for the entire frame (shutter angle 360 deg) which is probably the most important thing. Most cameras will default to something like 180 degrees shutter angle 1/(2xframerate) seconds shutter speed and that is why you get things like half the screen being dim

    Anders ÖhlundAnders Öhlund11 miesięcy temu
  • Moiré happens when the pattern resolution is higher than the sensor resolution, meaning: the monitors pixels are smaller than the camera sensors pixels thus it creates those interferences. (Moiré was part of my bachelor thesis) That's the reason why there are low pass filters on sensors to decrease the pattern's resolution before it hit's the sensor. (edit, you mentioned that after I wrote this)

Those computers you have, look awesome, and also recorded image on them. Never seen so good looking images of CRT monitors, it looked almost like real, and colors were shining live, like you are looking at real monitor and DOS games. Felt urgue to join, and play some oldies, like when I see real old computer with DOS game on screen and noone behind. That feeling from your images was like in reality, just sit behind computer and enjoy some oldies.

Best fix I've found on cellphones is to focus on the screen, then move the camera back a little to throw the focus off, and snap a photo before it refocuses.
