The first retail releases of SimCity launched on February 2, 1989 for the Macintosh and Amiga, with the IBM PC following later. And from that point onward, computer gaming was irreversibly changed!

  • Why would they try to prevent someone from making copies of the high scores? That is so random.

    • You can’t play the game without typing in one of those numbers. It was a form of copy protection for the game itself, basically early DRM. Got an old video on it here:

  • I played the hell out of that game, but I think I had it on the SNES. Later I got SC 2000 and that one I definitely put some hours on. The wife and I abused the bugs in that game viciously, like making waterfalls on the very edge of the map and putting up hydroelectric dams for power. The Sim City series kinda died after that, each new incarnation lost something and became more and more unfun. Now', it's just a joke.

  • Great video! But wow, the game looks so . . . DOS-y compared to the Mac version I grew up with. :) But then again, I couldn't even get back into SimCity 2000 when I bought it from GOG because even though the interface is really quite Mac-like, it takes over everything when it runs, and its windows float over a cramped, logo-ed game background instead of gracefully coexisting in movable, resizable, command-tabbable form on the desktop, as in my memories.

  • And they still can't make single laneways or pedestrian walkways for Japanese shopping streets. But kudos for the older simcities for having premade cities. Newer ones only had the terrain without a city.

  • Was a freshman in college in 1990. I must have played SimCity for 10,000 hours. Sometimes I would go to bed with it open, and when I woke up it would be the year 2525 and I would have $50,000,000 in the bank. Or my city will long since have been destroyed by disasters. Then Civilization came along and I lost some interest in SimCity. At least until another version came along. SimCity 2000 was amazing.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed SimCity over the years. Starting with my dad's NES game, then getting Classic for my PC in the mid-90s, and lastly buying SC4 - I always made my own personal goals with my cities. I would plan where the airport would be placed first, which would be on water and as close to the center of the map as possible. Then I would start building Commercial around the proposed airport followed by Residential, and then have Industry around the perimeter of the map to minimize pollution. I would only use rail for transit and I would never have a fire department. If I remember correctly, my cities would usually range between 150,000 and 190,000 in population. Although island cities would be different, being more like a collection of villages surrounding a centered airport. Ah, memories! I'm feeling nostalgic now.
