Late 80s PC flight simming at its finest. Taking a look at Flight Simulator 4 and its numerous expansions, add-on packs, and upgrades for MS-DOS PCs! I still love that Experimental Aircraft Editor.

  • I grew up with Flight Simulator X (Orginal), and Falcon 4.0 Allied Force (didn't know BMS was a thing at the time). I love flying MC Flight Sims, depending on the flight you want to do it can be quite relaxing. Edit: I also caught the tail end of X-Plane 9. PPS: I still use a Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 as my joystick lol.

    • With 2 add on programs, you could design aircraft that looked and flew differently. With the internet you could circulate and download those airplanes for free. The catch was that you had to have a patched version of FS4, and the patch was virtually impossible to find on the internet in the late 1990s.

  • I still remember reading the system requirements for many of these DOS games, like Doom, and others... 640k RAM, which today is a drip in the bucket compared to games of today requiring 4GB+ of RAM and video cards that housed more memory than even the most expensive iPod in 2006. I mean back in its day it was probably an innovative product. Of course now, you have more advanced simulators, like XPlane which one can use to train for a pilot's license (and gives a much more realistic experience thanks to more advanced hardware over the past 20 years ).

  • When my older brother was getting his Pilot's License, I went on many flights with him. From the Cessna 172, to the twin engine Baron, and finally some Turbo prop aircraft. My worst flight was when he was going to practice a Rudder-Over stall. Without telling me. Basically, you fly a straight line, and slowly cut the throttle, then the STALL warning starts blaring, the wing dips down, and then you enter into a spin... Face down. I saw nothing but the ground and trees, spinning round-and-round. I became a believer in God in that short span of time. He then throttled up, put the rudder in the opposite direction of the spin, and the dynamics of flight throws you out of spin. After all these years, I just want to say.... FUCK YOU, ROBERT!! I'm also proud of you. Flying 747's, A320's, and seeing the world. Dad would have been proud of you as well.

  • My first version of Flight Simulator was 2.0 for the Tandy Color Computer II disk system. It was black and white wireframe graphics, at a probably CGA-quality resolution. But the disk system greatly expanded the possibilities over the CoCo II cartridges alone, with FAR more complex games. As a young kid, I couldn't fly a plane in the BEST of circumstances, and I sure as hell couldn't avoid flying into Lake Michingan when taking off from Meigs Field in Chicago through a 200x170 black and white wireframe view of the world.

Within a few weeks it was obvious that if I wanted the "advanced" graphics settings "more lines and dots" I needed a faster machine. I went from a smoking 20 mhz machine to a unheard of 25. The salesmen ask why I needed so much power!! In today's money it was over $3 grand.
