LGR Oddware - Creative 3DO Blaster

The Creative Labs 3DO Blaster from 1994 is a full 3DO game console packed onto an ISA expansion card. Combined with a Panasonic CD-ROM drive, it lets you play 3DO games within Windows 3.1! What an enjoyable and uncommon treat.

  • Seeing a lot of comments along the lines of _"This is just like the Sega Saturn card from Nvidia!"_ I wish such a card existed! There seems to be a lot of confusion about what the Nvidia NV1 actually does. It does _not_ play Sega Saturn games, it only plays a handful of PC games that were converted _from_ the Saturn. Whereas this 3DO card plays the entire library of 3DO console games, not just a few PC ports. I made a video about the NV1 years ago if you wanna know more: plworld.info/show/mnOfqNK9hXumfpc/wideo.html

    • I wonder if the NV1 could be used for HLE Saturn emulation.

    • @DANfan69 That was part of it's problem though in a business that gives away the razor and charges for the blades. For Sony or Nintendo etc, the price of hardware could be subsidised by the fees that game sales brought in but 3DO hardware makers received nothing from subsequent games sales so had to cover hardware costs, advertising, and their profit margin. Frontloading everything like that caused the 3DO's stupidly high price

      Zombobo SmithZombobo Smith5 miesięcy temu
    • This was made possible due to 3DO basically licensing the hardware specs to various companies, which is why outside of the Panasonic/Masushista brand of 3DOs there were also ones manufactured by Goldstar.

    • Given that clarification, it reminds me of the x86 expansion cards for old Macintoshes.

    • @J.D. Took me a while to remember but I meant to recommend www.filfre.net It's the site of a guy who calls himself The Digital Antiquarian and has, for a few years, been regularly posting detailed and interesting articles he writes on the history of computers and gaming. I think he's up to 1989. But what's best is under the ebook tab on his site you can download for free epubs of his articles collected into books.

  • If I cant find this. I will make an fpga of this. Just got to find docs/schematics. Which seems to be harder to find. Than the actual card 😡

  • Couldn't they have done the video pass-thru internally, on the card itself? Just bridge the ports on the PCB.

  • That version of road rash runs better than the windows version that came out a few years later. It's also really cool to watch windows 3.1 multitask with full-blown games like a modern operating system. What a card.

  • So... you ever find out that something you had as a kid is now worth a lot? This first happened to me when my little brother gave me a holographic Charizard card back in 2001. I wasn’t into Pokémon and had no idea what it was..... worth thousands today. Now imagine me sitting here, no idea about what you’re showing. First the CD Rom looked familiar. Exactly like the one I used to use in my 486 build. Then that board... something really familiar about it, the pins which happened to match an IDE cable perfectly.... see my dad worked for Goodwill as the truck driver. He used to snatch up old computer parts for me to mess with and I remember this CD-Rom coming with the cable wrapped around it and the card tucked into the cable. I had no idea what it was and this was 2000ish, internet just wasn’t a thing..... too bad my dad passed away and I lost all of those things I left at my parents house.

  • Ridiculous product. Back then, it'd be cheaper to just buy a 3DO and video capture card than this product with a Creative CD drive and soundcard. Not to mention you could use the video capture card for other things. Not to mention you still had the option to hook up the standalone 3DO to a TV, and it had a better controller. Not to mention that you wouldn't have to mutilate the inside of your computer just to fit this card inside and attach everything.

    • No it wasn't. Look at how it played DOOM. I had DOOM running on a Cyrix clone of a 486 with a VESA Local Bus video card and the audio played through my Sound Blaster 16, and it played full-screen. Resolution wasn't great but it was much more playable than on that tiny central overlay on the 3DO card. The Panasonic 3DO was never a terribly good system. Consoles like the Sony Playstation came out in 1994 and had far better hardware and games that seemed to use that hardware. Most desirable 3DO titles were simply ports from other systems, and there weren't enough original/exclusive 3DO titles of quality to bother with the system. Console gamers were used to their cartridges and the replacement system needed to be pretty spectacular to attract them away (think Playstation) and the PC itself could natively play a lot of the games available on the 3DO. Probably worst for the 3DO, the PC's games were often readily copied, so there was no need to buy them to play them, or the kids these were marketed-to couldn't have afforded to buy the games (or the console) anyway, but the family *_might_* have enough need to justify having the home computer and possibly even upgrading the video card for a couple-hundred bucks.

  • It's an entirely separate processor (not even x86 CISC) on just a peripheral card that basically allows you to run code on a computer that it isn't even compatible with natively. If this card launched TODAY I'd nominate it for biggest innovation of the year. Imagine an Xbox 360 hardware emulation card doming out for PCIe 4.0 where you could play games from your DVD drive. People worldwide would be rejoicing in the streets. Hostile nations would cease fire.

  • The 3DO alone reminds me of PSVita. It was powerful and ahead of it's time, but it overestimated themselves with the high price point and their own power level. it's expensive, lack third party games, engine too difficult to carefully process and make games for, and somehow it's way more impractical than what's promised; 3DO is more expensive than the SEGA Genesis/Super Nintendo and a CD Player combined heck even a DVD player is cheaper than a 3DO, while PSVita is essentially a portable PS3 with suboptimal power usage and the battery doesn't last long like it's competitors and the higher price point and games flooded primarily with Visual Novel and exclusives that eventually got ported to PC this year (rip P4G players who bought Vita just to play the game). worse yet, shortly thereafter something better were introduced later (PS1 was introduced years after and not only it's almost as powerful as a 3DO it's also way cheaper, while PS4 was introduced sometime later and it overshadowed Vita to shit.)

That's Oddware!
