Overpopulation & Africa

Sources and further reading:
For most of our history, the human population grew slowly. Until new discoveries brought us more food and made us live longer. In just a hundred years the human population quadrupled.
This led to apocalyptic visions of an overcrowded earth. But the population growth rate actually peaked in the 1960s. Since then, fertility rates have crashed as countries industrialize and develop. World population is now expected to balance out at around 11 billion by the end of the century.
But the big picture conceals the details.
Let us look at one region in particular:
Sub-Saharan Africa. In 2019 it was home to a billion people living in 46 countries. Although its growth rate has slowed down in the last few decades, it is still much higher than in the rest of the world.
While some projections expect around 2.6 billion people others reckon with up to 5 billion by 2100.
Such growth would be a huge challenge for any society. But Sub-Saharan Africa is also the poorest region on earth.
So is Sub-Saharan Africa doomed? And why do the projections vary by 2.4 billion people?

    • @shoof Yep there are indeed outliers to this phenomenon, but generally it seems more religious countries have more children than non-religious or more secular countries.

      12shzarmai 5512shzarmai 5521 dzień temu
    • @12shzarmai 55 Technically, while a lot of high birth rate countries have more attachment to religion, it's not necessarily causation than it is correlation. Catholics, Hindus, Jews, and Muslims have maybe 1-2, or maybe 4 to 6 children depending on the country our region they live in, and that number depends entirely on the culture the parents grew up in. Even in wealthy, relatively religious countries like the US and Korea, socioeconomic status seems to affect birth rate more, which is why it's not considered to be much of a factor compared to poverty, culture, and child mortality. I don't know about most religions preaching about childbirth though, but for sects that do I'd assume that'll be a more substantial factor.

I have literally seen a visual improvement of Bangladesh from when I was a kindergartener to now as a high schooler. Now, if only the streets didn’t smell like shit (from actual cow shit).

  • Man, stop trying to justify Africa's problems by blaming the colonization alone and unlike a blatant lie you said about Asia having a upper hand due to not being colonized is dead wrong. Almost every nation in Asia was colonized, I am from India and people here still blame the British for our issues which are pathetic in my opinion, Germany had a complete devastation of its economy and society ever since the end of World War 1 until the fall of Soviet Union and yet it now has one of the highest living standard in the world. The same thing with Japan. I find the African countries to be like the poor people who just blindly blame the society for their condition rather than take on the responsibility and doing something about it. And the Europeans justify this behavior due to their ancestor's guilt, which surely doesn't help the African countries.

  • These are good plans, but Kurzgesagt's left out the simplest and easiest way to help Sub-Saharan Africa: cancel their debts. One of the main reasons these countries are so poor is because they owe huge amounts of debt to first-world countries. Most of their economies are spent on trying to repay these debts, but they're already out of control. If these first-world countries and the UN really cared about Africa, they would cancel the debts. We don't need the money, let Africa have it! As things stand, it's quite clear that "our" governments don't really care about Africans - they just want a constant source of income from Africa. Instead, they're sending over aid packages (a lot of which are then embezzled by corrupt rulers) to try stimulate African economies so they can have more profits in the future.

I'm sorry for Africans in Europe and the America's (me being one) we have been educated to believe that having children is a bad thing, and that contraceptions are good, when in reality contraception is probably worse then war and disease combined! Look at Japan, Singapore, China, South Korea And various European countries if they don't get to having children soon and forget about wealth (not completely) these countries will no longer exist! Money can only do much. People are under estimating the importance of reproduction/sex, it's actually in almost everything.

That's because the population will probably go beyond 11 billion. Either the first 3 I mentioned, or the economy will find a way to control the amount of people by inflating prices. Those who can't buy will die. A lot of goods are actually getting more expensive and it may seem bad for consumers, but overall it could be a preventive mechanism for overpopulation.

Their's was the last generation to have any noticeable child mortality rate, with half of my grandparents having lost at least 1 sibling in childhood. My Father had 7 siblings, and my mother 4. Then with my generation and most other kids I know it is only 1 or 2 others in the family, me having 1. I will probably only have 2 or 3 kids if I ever decided to settle down.

It was white missionaries from the West that brought new technology -- vaccines, water well and pump technology -- which greatly reduced child mortality in Africa. Now, almost all of those kids are surviving -- hence population explosion. so you can thank white people for Africas population explosion.

Yet almost the same amount of people live in Europe, and more people live in China and India, I think that there is no such thing as overpopulation just under developed. This idea that there is overpopltion started with Thomas malthus and justified some pretty horrible things we should probably start talking more about how overpopulation is a myth...

    Shane MilhoanShane Milhoan14 dni temu
    • Malthus and Ehrlich have caused so much harm with their fearmongering nonsense. Malthusianism has been proven to be wrong for centuries: resources that used to be scarce are made abundant by advanced technologies. For example: overpopulation will never exist because technological progress increases the planet's carrying capacity. The pace of technological progress will continue to accelerate exponentially, so despite fearmongering pessimists whining about how "technology is bad and nature is good", it will be technology that solves every problem (including ill-health and the climate crisis) and brings about a bright future.

    • @Potato guess that depends on how you define "working". i can't see muslim culture working anywhere in europe and it's not much better with the black community. USA probably works a little better cause you don't have so much social welfare and people are somewhat forced to join the workforce.

  • African countries don't need attention and investment, they need old and new colonial influences to get the f*ck out of there, part of this entails giving back what we stole and are still stealing. It's a disgrace. Not them. We. are.
