Found a new old stock IBM 5140 to unbox and set up! MS-DOS 3.21, monochrome CGA graphics, and even an attachable printer that goes around back. Will do a more in-depth video on it later, but for now let's enjoy it like it's 1986.

  • It amazes me that nobody other than Brother (because they make everything "printing" possible) has made a tiny monochrome dot matrix printer. I imagine it'd be very useful for on-site business printing for lawyers to cary than the big clunky rectangles HP has been selling for years, and cheaper to manufacture to boot.

  • Old video, but I just want to say, this little computer is adorable, I'm sure the portability was awful, especially as we do far better today. But the idea and solution is clever. Also unwrapped DOS! Holy crap.

The very idea of a proper IBM PC with a built in monitor was . I'd be interested to see how this machine holds up. Will it overheat like the Apple IIc could (and did)?

  • I actually bought one of these from a “catalog” after placing my order over a landline and then waiting almost two weeks for it to show up. I believe it was like $650 in 87 or 88. Sadly he did not show how the printer clipped to the ass end of it. You could knock out your fresh document on dot matrix thermal paper ready to throw in the copier to have it transformed into a real readable usable paper suitable for presentation before the toxic chemicals in the thermal paper could seep into your skin and cause liver damage. It was loud and slow and thoroughly impressive. Yes it did have a battery built in but no hard drive. when doing word processing when you went to edit you would have to put in different disks to perform functions. Even living in San Jose at the time I would break this baby out in public places and everyone would walk by staring at this portable pinnacle of technology in awe.

  • Kinda tempted to make a Rasberry Pi Laptop in an imitation of this form factor, would have lots of room for hardware, battery power, maybe an Arduino and could probably stick a handle on it for increased portability. Update: Ok yeah half way done the 3D model of the case planning to print this thing on my odd little Anet A8 3D printer, it's currently 12 inches long and 9 inches wide and split into multiple chunks to fit on the 8 x 8 x 8 inch build area of the printer. And of course it will have a TURBO button (that Launches Retro-Pi if nothing else) and there is enough space in this thing I could probably hide a USB Super NES controller under the Keyboard or similar... in theory, don't actually have one yet to subject to my digital Calipers to make sure it fits. Open to ideas or suggestions, current keyboard is a $4 Bluetooth thing so if anyone has recommendations for a compact (less than 9 inches wide) mechanical keyboard that would be ideal. Either way this is going to be fun and I've had this Raspberry Pi 3 B+ sitting around far too long without a job, time to fix.

  • As a cost cutting measure, IBM issued many of these to staff to use despite being obsolete and so very slow. Staff that were issued these units were secretaries, many low level personal in accounting or stock management. IBM had a separate facility nearby, a storage facility, where folks went to collect their brand new 5140's. The constant whining about having to work with these old, slow machines filled the air for months. You knew you were pretty low on the totem pole if you were issued one of these.
