Building a Better Windows 98 PC! The Megaluminum Monster

In 2019 we put together the Lazy Green Giant: a Win98 Pentium III computer with Voodoo 3 and Aureal Vortex 2 cards. Can't say I was ever 100% satisfied with it so it's time for a rebuild! Now with a SCSI2SD hard disk replacement, 360k floppy drive, and dual sound cards. AWE yeah.

  • Dude as soon as your layers start building up like that, the entire job is a lost cause. Peel it off and start over. Also, try floating your cans in a bucket of hot water next time. I've done a lot of plasti-dip jobs and that is the ticket. Plasti doesn't have a texture if you do it right.

  • Jill of the Jungle... I haven’t played that game since 1994(?), when our computer’s hard drive bit the dust while I was messing around with the shareware version. My dad knew nothing about hardware and always went for the cheaper options. The SNES-esque 3D graphics gave way to chkdisk and defrag as we desperately tried to find and use whatever hard disk sectors remained uncorrupted. It was a long time ago in tech terms (and real years), but, in a way, it feels like it was just yesterday.

  • Partially inspired by this video, I recently built myself my dream vintage PC which I could never have afforded back in the day: Dual P-III 800 MHz "Coppermine" slot 1 CPUs on an Asus P2BDS motherboard with an integrated Adaptec Ultra SCSI controller, an NVIDIA GeForce 4 Ti 4200 AGP graphics card (way overpowered and bottlenecked by the relatively slow CPUs, but allows effortless usage of anti-aliasing modes), an Intel 100 Mbps Ethernet PCI card, and the glorious SoundBlaster AWE64 ISA sound card with the gold-plated outputs. I installed a silent-running 500W ATX PSU which comes will all the legacy molex and floppy style power jacks without needing to use converters or adapter cables, 512 MB ECC CL2 RAM and an internal IOMega 2GB Jaz disk (SCSI), a GoTek floppy disk drive emulator, a DVD-RW IDE drive and a CompactFlash to IDE reader in the 3,5" slot so I can swap CF cards in an out and experiment with different legacy operating systems. I have BeOS, Zeta, WIn98, Win2K, WinXP and OPENSTEP 4.2 for Mach and MacPuppy Linux all running flawlessly, installed on separate CF cards of varying sizes between 2 to 16 GB. I also swap in different graphics cards depending on what kind of software I want to play with, I have an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, a Matrox G200, a Matrox G400 Max and a 3Dfx Voodoo 3 all modded with passive cooling so the PC runs almost silently. I've installed all this into a vintage, all metal ATX case built like a tank and which can work in either desktop or tower orientation and It's been a wonderful and rewarding project. Win98SE is still pretty flaky when pushing the system and can struggle (although I experienced no BSODs), but everything else is rock solid. I was very impressed. Windows 2000 Pro SP4 has been awesome for experimenting with all the games and benchmarks from that era of 1999-2006. Running Aquamark, Wipeout XL and the Comanche benchmark after all these years has been a huge tickle to the nostalgia bone. Some of the software from that era, especially early MMX and D3D titles, doesn't work well (or even at all) under emulation on a modern computer, so this was well worth it for me.

  • You should make cables yourself, you can e.G. make a floppy cable which has A in the middle. Just put 2 twists in it. The IDC connectors are quite readily available and easily mounted in a small vise (there are special crimping tools, but I never used them).

I know I can download my games on steam again, but I miss the old computers and software. Plus having dos is a nice feature i really miss.
