Kodak DisplayMaker: $2,000 Video Graphics System from 1988

In 1988, Kodak introduced the Display Maker system as a digital alternative to analog presentations. No need to rely on overhead projectors and expensive 35mm slides anymore! Of course, no one bought one.

  • Whenever Kodak tried to branch out it was always something weak and poor quality, like they didn't really believe it was worth investing in. Which was also why they never got into digital photography, and we all know how that turned out. It's not really a wonder they went bankrupt

  • The Amiga-based Video Toaster completely destroyed this unit at half the price. Although not targeted for the market segment aimed at by Kodak, it could easily do animated video slides at double the resolution and colour depth, and still images with an unbelievable at the time 4096 colours at the same 320x200 resolution. No wonder the DisplayMaker died, but neat to see it in it's undeath on the LGR channel.;-)

  • Although not connected to this, I remember back around 20 years ago using an LCD panel, 800x600 on an Overhead projector, it was basically an LCD screen mounted in a panel with no back lighting, had composite and vga connections, you simply connected it up to a PC, placed it on the Overhead projector and voila a huge computer screen, so you could show your presentations or watch films. Draw back was using an ohp in a small office, with its 600watt halogen bulb it really kicked off some heat. Still have it in my Loft, not that it's been used in more than a decade.
